Check Your Source

Last week we talked about our source of inspiration, creativity and ambition. One of my biggest pet peeves is people who repeat something without checking their source. Preachers who do this really get my goat.

Have you heard the one about how eagles when they are old? They supposedly fly up into the mountains and pluck out all their feathers and break off their beaks. Then it all grows back and the eagle is new again. It sounds great but it isn’t true. I heard it a lot growing up as an inspiration for old folks. It isn’t true, someone should check their source.

So how do we check our source of ideas, creativity, inspiration, ambition, and more? While I assume your source is the same as mine: God.

1- Pray and ask him. The Bible says He will supply all our needs according to His riches in glory. (Philippians 4:19) If you need it, His glory can supply it. I stand on this verse for all my ministry needs: creativity, finances and volunteers.

2- Check the Word. God is a creative God, reading His Word has answers we haven’t discovered yet. I see something new each time I read it.

3- Look at creation. Go outside, take a walk. Get inspired by the handiwork of the Creator. Creation is singing His praises still today.

4- Get ideas from someone else. All my best ideas were someone else’s first. Iron sharpens iron. (Proverbs 27:17) Seek wise counsel.

5- Remind yourself of past ideas, goals, and victories. Before David killed Goliath he told everyone he killed the bear and the lion. (1 Samuel 17:36) what bears and lions have you slain? Remind yourself of your victories in God and see Him work again.
