How To Succeed In Ministry – Part 2

Warning this one’s a little raw. Its not intended for children

4. Just Because God Spoke Through a “Donkey” in the Old Testament That Doesn’t Mean You Should Be One

Yeah I know, that’s a long title. I’m not sure how familiar you are with the story that this draws reference from but its found in Numbers the 22nd chapter. I have heard people say “God used a donkey in the Bible to speak so he can use me just like I am.”

I know and believe that the grace of God reaches further than we can imagine, but don’t be a “donkey”. We are supposed to be people of character not just people who are characters. We need to constantly develop our character. The Bible says in 1 Thessalonians (KJV) to “Abstain from all appearance of evil.” I like to say it this way: don’t even let evil make an appearance in your life. I like what Jim Wideman said about this. “If the appearance of evil can stand as proof of evil, the appearance of good can stand as proof of good things.”

Paul told Timothy (2 Timothy 2:20 NLT): “In a wealthy home some utensils are made of gold and silver, and some are made of wood and clay. The expensive utensils are used for special occasions, and the cheap ones are for everyday use.”

I’ve actually heard people read this verse and say “Oh yeah I’m just an old clay pot, take me as I am.” Wrong answer, keep reading the next verse.

“If you keep yourself pure, you will be a special utensil for honorable use. Your life will be clean, and you will be ready for the Master to use you for every good work.”

You are not an old broken wooden plate! You are a special tool for a specific job. Look at the start of the verse “keep yourself pure”. It’s not just talking about sin.  You honor God by developing Biblical character. Read Paul’s letters and his commands to those serving in ministry. Make those personal and do them.  Youversion.com has a great reading plan that take you through the epistles and the book of Acts in 85 days. (I am currently reading through that myself.)

  1. This is great, and wonderful to see you addressing this. I’ve often heard influential Christians say “I’m just the donkey Jesus is riding on.” Bah! That’s never settled well with me. We are made in His image, after all.
